Omar’s Halloween by Maryann Kovalski

20171031_084850This one is a perennial favorite at Cayley School.  Poor Omar….Halloween didn’t turnout quite like he expected!  I’m looking forward to sharing this with some trick or treaters at Cayley School today!

I love this book and am so looking forward to sharing it with my students.  The text is beautiful and poetic and captures exactly the frustration and the joy that comes from  communicating through art. I love the expressions, simply rendered, on the characters faces and the use of flowing lines to illustrate the creativity.   “It’s about the creative process, abstract art, friendship and the universal desire to be understood.”  (from the book jacket)

Where Will I Live? by Rosemary McCarney

20171017_140801Where Will I Live? by Rosemary McCarney left me and my students speechless.  If you are concerned to build empathy in children towards the plight of refugee children around the world. This is the book.

Fatty Legs: A True Story

Really grateful for the opportunity to hear Christy Jordan-Fenton and Margaret Pokiak-Fenton talk about their important work today.  Their story impacted me greatly when I first read it in 2010 and it continues to impact me today.  Read it!

20171011_085212We loved this book at Cayley School!  This winsome illustrations and simple lyrical text communicated beautifully all the wonderful potential that might unfold all because of a ‘mistake’!
